In this article, we will dive deep into this topic so that you can get the best advice available. Luckily, I’ve done all the research so you don’t have to. Let’s dive in.
How Much Cat Grass Should a Cat Eat?
It’s no surprise that our feline companions are notorious meat eaters. My cats absolutely love the flavor of duck, chicken, and salmon. But it may be a surprise to you that cats actually like a little bit of greens every now and then.
Cat grass can be a terrific addition to your cat’s carnivorous based diet. So how much cat grass should a cat eat then? The answer to this question is that it doesn’t really matter. As long as it’s grass made for your cat and not regular lawn grass, they can eat it as often as they like. No worries on your part.
Cat grass is also known to have a few health benefits for your cat such as being rich in B vitamins. Also, cat grass can actually help with digestive issues your cat may have such as aiding in coughing up hairballs easier.
If your cat eats something that is indigestible to them, eating cat grass may help induce vomiting so they can rid the indigestible matter out of their system.
Do Indoor Cats Need Cat Grass?
The simple answer is no. An indoor cat does not actually need to eat cat grass to survive or to even have a balanced diet. But why not give them the option anyway?
Cat grass makes a great snack and also gives your cat a little more variety in their diet. Not all cats love cat grass or will even want to eat it, but why not try anyway.
You may notice that your cat likes to eat your houseplants. If this is the case, it’s a sure sign that they may like the taste of cat grass since it is also plant vegetation. However, keep in mind that some houseplants are toxic to your cats and should not be eaten. Click here for a comprehensive list of toxic houseplants.
How Can I Get My Cat to Eat Cat Grass?
The best way to get your cat to eat cat grass is directly from the plant itself while it’s in its container. A good rule of thumb is to wait until the cat grass is about 4 inches tall.
Make sure to provide fresh grass plots to your cat every couple of weeks or so to make sure it stays fresh and flavorful. This may entice your feline companion to eat the cat grass more often.
What is the Best Cat Grass for Cats to Eat?
There is a wide variety of cat grass available. Some varieties include wheatgrass, orchard grass, and common oat grass. A lot of times these varieties are mixed together and sold as a variety pack. You can buy cat grass in a whole kit as well, making it easier to grow it for a lot cheaper than you would if you bought everything separately.
The best cat grass growing kit in my opinion will be one that includes everything you need to get started, including the container that you will be growing it in.
If you already have all the containers and soil, then all you really need is the cat grass seeds. I recommend this one here sold on Amazon. They are really easy to grow, but best of all they are 100% organic, non-gmo seeds. And those are the best kind in my opinion.
You also have the option of buying plants that are already grown instead of growing the plant yourself. To find cat grass plants that have already grown, try contacting your local greenhouse. They usually have the best kinds and you can ask them how they are grown. That way you are getting the best possible grass for your cat to snack on. Keep in mind, though, that growing cat grass at home is not that hard to do.
How to Grow Cat Grass
The first thing you’ll need is a container that is suitable for growing cat grass in. This container should be heavy so your cat doesn’t knock it over. To get a head start on the seeds before you actually plant them, it is a good idea to soak your seeds in a glass of water for a few hours prior to planting them in the soil.
The next thing to do is to put some soil in your container. About 3 to 4 inches will do. Then place the seeds on top and cover them with another layer of soil. Make sure it’s not too deep of a layer or it will take a long time for the seeds to shoot above the surface when they start sprouting.
It will take anywhere from 3 to 6 days for the seeds to sprout. Once they do, ease up on the water somewhat so you don’t drown and kill the grass plant.
Once the grass is about 4 inches tall, let your cat have at it. Make sure to keep the plant where it gets at least some sunlight. The plant should last about 2 weeks. Rinse and repeat every time you want your cat to have a new cat grass plant.
If you plan on giving cat grass to your cat on a regular basis, my suggestion would be to have a few plants in various growth stages going at once. That way, you never run out of cat grass.
